Here's an early picture of some cobblestone street tiles I'm working on! There's currently layers for cobblestone, grassy cobblestone, mud, grass, and a mud/grass mix. Still want to add some more layers to this.

Playing more with layers... No debris yet for the roads, but here I've turned on all the layers for flowers and rocks: The dropshadow around the stones is a little crazy, and I personally wouldn't have all the layers on at once... That's 10 layers of options, though, and there'll be at least five or six different tiles to do.

Still playing! I've got 13 basic "narrow" street tiles ready, and I am playing with wagon tracks on the mud layer... The tracks look OK on top of the mud and muddy grass textures, but absolutely ridiculous over the cobblestone or grass layers... Still not sure if I'll include the tracks in the initial set. I did the layering so that you can choose the two ground textures separately. That means each tile can be inverted - grass on the outside with cobblestone path or cobblestone outside with grass path, for example. That should certainly increase the number of possible layouts. I should be able to finish this up this week, though.

As I start building the PDF layers, I keep thinking of more tile options that I may want to include... I think I might divide this into multiple sets. :-P I'm hoping to put together a simplified package for the papercut awards on the cardboard warriors forum!

Just did a little math to distract me from the tedium of laying out the PDF. There's going to be roughly 33 layers per tile, and there are 16 tiles. That's 528 layers to lay out... Zzz... I'd be willing to bet this is easier to do straight from Photoshop. If there's a way to export from GIMP to a layered PDF, I'm all ears. Perhaps some day I'll investigate scripting Scribus. I'm sure I can come up with a convention for naming layers and layer groups that I could automate exporting in GIMP, and then automate the importing process in Scribus...
Anyway, just whining to take a break. At the rate I'm going, it'll be a couple days before the tile set is done.

Yikes! I was thinking 'this may be getting to be a lot for GIMP to handle...' so I saved and backed up my file before adding too many more layers. 2GB is a pretty big file by my standards, and apparently GIMP agreed. A few minutes later, CRASH! So, I'm thinking I'll tease this into separate files for each tile...

Phew. Reorganized my files and streamlined my process. I laid out six of the 16 planned tiles for this set this evening. In theory, that means a couple evenings and I'll be done! Well, that's only in theory... This weekend is pretty busy with friends visiting from out of town. I'm hoping to get some time on Sunday to work this through, but it might not be 'til mid-week. Once the tiles are done, I'll do up some promo pics and think about what 'instructions' I may need to do.

Very excited I was able to crank out four more tiles pretty quickly in the little free time I had today. Can't wait to make this one available!
